Yes, lets sit at the table and talk about our underwear. Sounds prime, really.

You never really see a lot of Lord Covington in the book...not until his demise anyways, his relationship with Kamen isn't the most healthy, but he at least seems to respect his father.

At least the kids know when they're being completely ridiculous.

This just looks like a self-inflicted food fight on Artemis' part.

Posted on DA, just wanted to keep it here for references.

Suddenly "Y" strap suspenders are attractive.

One of the things I like the most about writing childhood Kamen and Artemis is that it requires me to do a lot of research. Matches, the curses Kamen uses (I teetered on him using the word "bollocks" but decided that he wouldn't use it in front of Artemis), hatpins, and suspenders (American term) vs. braces (the British term that would have been used in that period).

The game sardines, its like hide and seek but one person hides while the others seek, then as people find the hider they join them, so after a while the hiding place becomes painfully obvious. The last person to find the hider has to hide in the next round. I don't know for certain how far this game dates back to, but my research dates it back to at least 1700's, then again, it's my story and I can say what I want really.

Also, anyone remember that episode of South Park where Tom Cruise, R Kelly, and John Travolta are in the closet? Yeah I totally watched that a few times while writing this.

Something else also interesting. This was pushed out in a few short days from scratch and with a very vague idea, it's referenced only once in the trilogy by Kamen in Book 2, but it still manages to just fall short of 5,000 words. This is why NaNoWriMo was so easy for me to get through I guess.

Ten points to anyone who can translate what Artemis says, because I AM NOT translating it.

Sargasso smiled quietly at his daughter's head on his shoulder, and let his eyes move from her to the man with the scar that watched the both of them intently.

"You got into another fight with your mother." Sargasso stated quietly.

Artemis pushed her mouth to the side and her mouth puckered with wrinkles, "I don't try to, Papa."

"I know." He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and gave her a small squeeze.

Artemis smiled at the gesture and watched her father's dark hand tap her shoulder a few times in tune to the music, "I feel like we got along better when we didn't see each other so much."

"It'll pass. It always does." He made a small humming noise—not at all in tune with the music—and glanced over to where Valerie and Rei spoke with Weinham, "We expected this, being thrown into a family after being isolated was never thought to be an easy feat." He let go of Artemis' shoulder now, turning to speak of something much more serious, "One favor I have to ask: please don't take everything Rei says seriously, the man is very facetious."

Incredibly long excerpt, but my favorite chapter at this point in time. I just love how much is going on at this point.

Chapter 74 )

...because I feel like a COMPLETE ASS when I say it.

Valerie's jaw dropped, "That is blasphemous! How dare you? Buenae is our Father, Great Goddess Celeste is our Mother; all life stems from their union!"

Van Dean chuckled, "Then what are you? The offspring of an incestuous relationship between the Great Mother and one of her children?"

xhesika: (Caspius Van Dean)
Artemis slumped into the cushions of the davenport, burying her head in the palms of her hands, and feeling stupid for going against Valerie Araceli’s wishes, “Mother is right. I’m an idealist and there’s no way I’ll ever be able to get through to you. I was stupid to hope.”

With a small smile Van Dean knelt at her feet, letting his hands rest on her knees to look up at her, “No. You’re wrong. It’s because of your idealism that I love you. The way you delight in the simpler things of life. Your childlike ability to forgive me and you continue to love me despite it all.”

She hardened her expression at his accusation, “I do not love you.”

“Oh but you do. You love Nyles as well, but you do love me. I can see it on your soul every time I look, it’s there without fail.” Van Dean reached one hand up and found her hand, threading her fingers with his, “You love me, you hate me, and it’s tearing you apart."

Princes

"Yv jy oys utebb libyzg ty mzytfiv amz?" Or do you still belong to another man? Kamen said softer.

"E jyzt libyzg ty mzoyzi." I don't belong to anyone. Artemis said, "E libyzg ty ai." I belong to me.

"The good thing about this war is that I don't have to worry about some Prince coming in and marrying you." He moved his hand to her side as she turned to him, "They're all too terrified of Van Dean."

"I'm all the prince I need." She kissed his forehead, "I could be your prince."

She may be insane, but she's leading into Nancy very smoothly.

One of the bigger twists of Artemis: for most of the book it looks like Kamen's the hero of the story, in actuality Artemis is the hero of the story, but has to go batshit insane and die to become strong enough to take out Van Dean.
xhesika: (Caspius Van Dean)
Obviously they follow a form of Celestism, but Celeste really doesn't put rules down and rather goes on a morality/honor system. Rei drops the joke several times that he's an atheist, but when you're a prime example of your creation story you don't have much of an arguement. Much less of one when you've met the diety.

Nora Sybil is the only demi-god, she was the only one actually birthed from Celeste.

Twelve members of Parliament to allude to the twelve disciples or the twelve gods of Olympus, the addition of the Chancellor pushes the number up to lucky thirteen, turning the allusion more towards Jesus and the Disciples.

Namae based on Hindu Naga. Jaedis more a steampunk futurism.

Sacred Forest's name is "Jannah", after the Islamic Heaven. The pond that Celeste resides by is called "Lethe". Leading the Forest itself to be a junction of life and death.

Ending riddle: insinuates that the "old gods" are the human gods. Angels and demons don't exist in the religion of Buenae, but are rather myths.

The demon Vexus in Thorn Tower is considered left over from the old gods, and is neither Human nor Buenan.

Humans, according to Christianity, are made from dust. Referred to several times in the book as "stone golems". Buenans were flowers of Celeste's off shooting roots. Reinforcing the reasoning for hermaphroditic characters, and the reasons why Humans and Buenans can't mate. Also with the battle between Celeste and "The Old Gods", it is widely believed that the two species are separated in the afterlife and stone crumbles but flowers reblossom.

I wish I could write chapters and chapters of snuggly fluffy goodness between Kamen and Artemis like in the silver book, and I'm noticing it much more now that I've gotten into all the Haven scenes...well the ones where they're not running for their lives. I'm one chapter from the end of Book 1, and I just know things aren't going to be this adorable when Victor and Nancy get into the picture.

PSSST. Also. Morpheus needs to understand that gifts in dreams don't cross over into the waking. Had another dream last night.

All fear seemed to leave; the cold air whipping about her shoulders, nothing at that moment could be worse than the phantom pains wrenching their way through her sides; starting their way at her ribcage and trailing down to her thighs.

Not half a second had passed between the time Kamen's foot had slipped and Artemis made her decision.

Clovis may not forgive her, and time may not heal this sin, but Nora Sybil's words came back to her, "allow yourself a moment of selfishness."
xhesika: (Caspius Van Dean)
Rei smiled and added a little more bounce to his step, “So what does the High General do on his days off?”

Kamen let a small smile grace his face and he looked down to where his feet met the ground, “I went back to the old estate.”

“Visit relatives?”

Kamen shook his head, “Just Michealis, and only briefly. I had to get something.”

“Something, eh? Something you want to tell me about?”

“My mother’s ring.” Rei stopped in the hall and Kamen took a few more steps before looking back to where his friend had stopped, “You okay?”

Rei gave Kamen a pouty face, “That’s adorable.”

Kamen rolled his eyes, “Really? Rei, don’t make that face, it’s worse than when you file your nails at the desk.”
xhesika: (Caspius Van Dean)
I tear up every time I read this over, the images are vivid.

“How fitting!” Nora gave a weak laugh to the hand now positioned over her heart, “That I would not perish at the hand of my husband when he wanted to take advantage of my gift.” She let her head fall back onto Van Dean’s chest, glancing up at the eyes that she had never before personally witnessed, “Nor the spirits of Jannah looking to take me into a tree of my own.” Her eyes warmed with a honeyed fire of their own, “But that the demon that covets my little Orla will tear out the seat of my emotions. The essence of my life.” She laughed again, her eyes beginning to well with tears that would become caught on her eyelashes and fly out into the air when she blinked, “I am not afraid. Never afraid, and I turn boldly to my end.” Her voice hardened, “You are a fool, Caspius Van Dean.” Van Dean’s fingers tore into her chest with ease, cutting and tearing flesh and bone as if they were butter, but Nora Sybil’s screams were more surprised than pained, “Ah! Ah, sleep. Perhaps I’ll dream?”
xhesika: (Caspius Van Dean)
I fucking love this chapter.

The call was ended by Rei and Kamen quickly stuffed the holodex back into his pocket. He glanced around for only a few seconds before he caught sight of a black mechafly with its owner already fled from the scene.

How to ride a mechafly was something that all who entered the military learned early on, and luckily for Kamen and Artemis it wasn’t something that one forgot how to do. Kamen held his hand out to the sentient machine, waiting for its bulbous eyes to flicker alive. The mechafly bowed its head slightly to signal its approval to Kamen, and Kamen quickly pulled Artemis onto the machine with him.

Artemis seemed to snap out of her shock and grasped onto Kamen’s jacket, turning her head to look watch the road ahead as Kamen pulled the mechafly into the air and began creating his own road, “Are you sure you can drive this thing?”

A wry smile made its way across Kamen’s face, “Nope.”

Artemis made an awkward attempt to position herself better, but found herself caught on Kamen’s lap with arms stuck around his neck. She let out a small gasp with the first dip and acceleration. “I don’t think this is meant for passengers!”

“It isn’t!” Kamen’s voice was lost on the air, but his smile widened and he wrapped a hand around her waist to pull her closer.

It seems like it takes forever for Kamen and Artemis to get back to the cutesy stuff after the wedding, but I love how it seems to burst through like this with action-y scenes and fire and explosions (the stuff leading up to this).

Nora Sybil shook her head slowly, her golden eyes illuminated, "The prophecy will withstand whatever happens. Fate cannot be escaped, but we choose how we meet it."

"You still choose to hide behind that silly prophet." Van Dean scoffed.

"I have faith in the Oracle. I have faith in Great Mother Celeste. I have faith in Clovis."

Oh my god, choose me, choose me! I TOTALLY know why she's gaga over the oracle!
