The full chapter is on DA, I really like this one. There's a lot of action, flashyback thingys from Kamen's POV, service banter. I feel all sorts of sad when he ties the ribbon to Necrosis. Not going to lie, there's a sentence: Artemis had been completely skittish about most of the contact Kamen had attempted the night before despite his intentions being innocent. Because Kamen's noble and all, but he's not all that noble.

He's really rather emo when you get down to it. ...and arrogant...and jealous...and he's really shiesty as Victor Covington, crap, who's the villain here again?

Rei's Sexuality

Its one of the smaller funny things.

I feel the need to reiterate Rei's gender somewhere before book 1 ends. Its mentioned once or twice when the character is introduced, but since he chooses to be identified as male I think the reader forgets that Rei actually has both sets of genetalia. I think one of the more humorous ways to do this would be for him to just not wrap his chest one day and have Kamen feel all sorts of awkward in a meeting. Come to think of it, with as far into the story I am, I believe Kamen is still in the dark about the entire thing.

Actually I don't think that any of the new service or military members since the cycling really know that Rei is a hermaphrodite. The closest he's gotten so far to spilling the beans is when he asks Fosh if he wants to be disciplined. Even then Fosh only sees it as just another creepy thing Rei says, and is wierded out by how feminine he can get his voice.

Fosh ends up being a really lewd character, it gets to the point where he refuses to even talk about taking the High General position because none of the sanctioned companions will sleep with a High General because of them having to be devoted to the dauphine...and something Rei did as High General... Later in book 2 Fosh sees Rei dressed more feminine and doesn't recognize him to the point of asking everyone who "that girl" was and how he could get in contact with her--pretty much spilling the beans that he thought she was hot RIGHT TO REI. Of course Rei gets a kick out of it but decides to let Fosh keep his pride and never tells him about "that girl".

The only issue--and I don't even know if I should see this as an issue--is that with Rei's unrequited love for Valerie this could spark A LOT of yuri thoughts. Hell, it sparks some pretty hot images for me.

Come to think of it, there is already a chapter blocked out in book 2 where Nancy pretty much sizes Rei up and even gropes him, then says something to the effect of, "huh. we're the same size." Giving crazy nosebleeds to Kamen. I laugh at the bones of that scene. so. hard.

EDIT: something else.

On the subject of Rei and Valerie. One of the earlier thoughts for Sargasso was going to be that he most certainly WAS human and the Kaygoian government was really pulling the wool over Nora Sybil (as they did not trust her, and to be quite honest, she's the oracle but chooses not to tell anyone of it and instead pulls out all these random ideas for politics LOL). With the re-write this is NOT the case, Denican Sargasso has a legitimate tie to the Kaygoian government and as a result he underwent a nationality change, going from German to Kaygoian (his complexion is actually darker than Rei's).

One of the big problems that shows up with Kamen and Artemis first in book 2 and then largely in book 3 is that humans and buenans CAN'T mate. With the original idea of Sargasso being human this would make Artemis' existance impossible, right? One of the more scandalous ideas that was only hinted at once was that Rei was the father...the more awkward thing being that Rei identified as female in that version.

To sum it up, in the version before this Artemis was the bi-product of Rei and Valerie...a very feminine Rei...

I must have posted this at some point in the past, but its not the bones of it anymore. It can't be just me, I feel like Valerie is pretty insensitive to her father. She must have some idea as to the why/how he died, but she's off laughing at how Rei slanders him.
