Maroon 5 is underplayed on the radio.
I feel like the night should be over, but I've got more plans for it yet.
The full chapter is on DA, I really like this one. There's a lot of action, flashyback thingys from Kamen's POV, service banter. I feel all sorts of sad when he ties the ribbon to Necrosis. Not going to lie, there's a sentence: Artemis had been completely skittish about most of the contact Kamen had attempted the night before despite his intentions being innocent. It was changed almost immediately after it was written to: Artemis had been completely skittish about most of the contact Kamen had attempted the night before despite his intentions being mostly innocent. Because Kamen's noble and all, but he's not all that noble.
He's really rather emo when you get down to it. ...and arrogant...and jealous...and he's really shiesty as Victor Covington, crap, who's the villain here again?
Kamen looked up at the mention of his name and made a failing attempt at a smile, "Where would you get an idea like that?”
He had gotten his friend out of his thoughts, the success brought a wide grin to his face, “I think anyone who’s been around this hall to watch the Orla and I engage would come to the same conclusion.” He pulled Meta from its scabbard took a few backwards strides closer to the center of the hall, “You taught her, didn’t you?”
The memory of the young girl with the red hair and white ribbons in a plastron and jacket brought a smile to his face and he reached into his pocket with an idea. “We have similar styles.”
Rei laughed and made no comment about the thick white ribbon trailing out slowly from Kamen’s pocket and delicately being tied in a bow around the hilt of Necrosis.
“Are you going to accept my challenge or are you going to play with ribbons all day?” He glanced at the other two in the room, both of which were slightly relieved that they wouldn’t be engaging for Rei’s pleasure after the night they had spent wandering somewhere on the sub-floors.
Kamen held Necrosis in front of him for a second; Artemis’ ribbon caressed his thumb before falling to the side. Without warning he jumped to the floor, immediately swinging out to strike at Rei with his leap, the blow was blocked easily with only a twist of Rei’s wrist.
Artemis was graceful with Chaos; every move for her was a ballet. When she engaged her entire body reacted to the fight, bending in ways only a daughter of Celeste was capable of. Kamen carried the same grace, but where he lacked Artemis’ flexibility he made up in speed and force. Artemis’ movements were precise and carefully planned, but she relied heavily on dodging. It didn’t take Rei long to figure out just how strong Kamen had become with his training in the service, even the first hit was almost enough to break his wrist.
The ribbon fluttered over Kamen’s hand. Fluttering. All pages of Artemis' copy of the unification were sent fluttering on the wind down from Q'ael Dan'il the night prior, but the signature of Nora Sybil would always remain thick upon them. The girl had spent nearly an hour with her head on his shoulder and the warmth of it came back with every rotation to block Rei’s advances.
Rei took a few steps back. Had Kamen’s strikes gotten heavier? His friend’s face had become blank and Rei swallowed hard, he hadn’t engaged anyone so much better than him in a while and he now worried that he was out of practice for even the most standard of defensive techniques. He was outmatched.
Two quick strikes from Kamen, one from the right the other from the left.
Anyone would have made a promise like that with the way you were crying. He had said to her the night before. She had wasted no time in reminding him of the promise made a year prior when he had gone to give her a proper kiss. In her defense she had seen it as a desperate attempt to not break the unification any more than she already had.
Kamen made an attempt to make a jab at Rei from the side, the attempt was immediately blocked and Rei was able to finally get in a few strikes, all blocked easily by Kamen.
Artemis had been completely skittish about most of the contact Kamen had attempted the night before despite his intentions being mostly innocent. Something much worse than what he had witnessed had happened in the past—he was certain of it.
And Rei knew it.
He quickened his strikes now, advancing and dodging, his technique all too similar to Artemis’. Rei would have gone up against him to fight for what little ground he still had, but Artemis didn’t have this sort of strength or speed behind Chaos and he hadn’t gone up against anyone like this in years. Kamen knew exactly how to use both his strength and speed in combat, and Artemis was spot on—he was amazing with a sabre.
"Yield." Kamen appeared to be in a daze and made another strike, "Yield?" Rei was certain Kamen had heard him this time, but his friend still lashed out with a blank stare. "YIELD."
Kamen stopped this time, nearly dropping Necrosis he let out a small huff. He was imagining things; Rei was too close to Artemis to allow things to get too far out of hand. Nothing had changed between the two since their late night chats in his office back at the Covington Estate.
